Free Comic Book Day: When Free Comic Books Mean Big Business

Spider-Man Season One. Witchblade. Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Avengers Age of Ultron. These are some of the titles available on May 5 for the low, low cost of absolutely nothing at all. Although the word "free" is in the title of Free Comic Book Day (FCBD), the event is embraced by comic book publishers and store owners alike for boosting their bottom line.

It's been quite a month for Marvel Comics. Last weekend, they watched their beloved "Avengers" franchise provide the biggest opening weekend for a film in box office history . And this week, though with a little less fanfare, they rolled out an exclusive digital comics partnership with online comic distribution powerhouse, ComiXology , which only furthers their commitment to the digital medium.
